  • My boyfriend doesn't understand my crazy schedule and we keep fighting about it. I don't want to break up with him, but I don't know what to do. Help me!

  • As a varsity cheerleader, your event calendar is likely to get filled up pretty quickly. This can be difficult for those around you to understand, especially someone who's very close, like a boyfriend. So what do you do when your boyfriend doesn't understand your cheerleading squad's crazy schedule? There are a few simple things you should think about before breaking it off when you don't want to.
  •
  • Have a Heart-to-Heart: Communication is very important in any relationship. Sit down and have a face-to-face conversation. Let your boyfriend speak his concerns first, without interruption. Then, you can speak your mind and you can both discuss the situation and possible solutions as a team. He needs to understand that a varsity cheerleader has a very interactive and competitive life. Cheerleading squads will keep you busy between fundraising, practice, and games. But you also need to understand his feelings. Be sure that he realizes he's important to you. If your boyfriend participates in a team sport or other activity, try comparing that with your role as a varsity cheerleader to help him make the connection.

  • Make Time Wherever Possible: If your boyfriend is this upset about your cheerleading squad's schedule, you may simply need to make some extra effort to spend time with him. Let him know you care by showing him. It could prove to be difficult as a varsity cheerleader. But even a few minutes or an hour here and there is better than nothing. Have him come watch you at practice, if possible. Invite him to dinners with your family. Study for school together. Whenever you have any possible time you can give to him, take advantage of it. There may be times where your schedules conflict. But the extra effort will show him you do care about him, even though you may be cheerleading an awful lot. A varsity cheerleader is above rank in comparison to the other cheerleading squads. Therefore, responsibility is greater.

  • Consider Your Options: Prepare yourself for more than one possibility. If your boyfriend understands your varsity cheerleader role and you can make time for him, that's awesome! You're likely headed where you wanted. If your boyfriend just can't seem to face your heavy schedule or you can't make time for him, it may be time to take a break or let go. No one wants to be the last thing on anyone's to-do list. On the same token, no one wants to feel like they have to quit doing something they love. Varsity cheerleading squads are hard to get into. If you love him, you'll understand that you should make the choice that makes both of you as happy as possible, not just one of you.
